In the summer of 2014, a tragic event unfolded in Huntington Station, New York, that cut short the life of Daniel Carbajal, a 25-year-old man. On the evening of July 23rd, Carbajal was gathered with a group of people outside a home on East 9th Street. The night was shattered at approximately 9:35 p.m. when a man, described as dark-skinned, approached the group and opened fire. Carbajal was fatally struck in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another man, 21-year-old Anthony Napolitano, was also wounded in the attack, sustaining a non-life-threatening injury to his leg. The gunman fired additional shots at the house before making his escape, fleeing south on Varney Avenue.
The sudden and brutal violence left a community in shock and a family devastated. At the time of his death, Daniel Carbajal was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first child. His loved ones remembered him as a hardworking landscaper who often worked six or seven days a week alongside his father. They described him as a marvelous son who loved his family and was respectful to his elders. His girlfriend recalled their last moments together, sharing a meal just an hour before the shooting, underscoring the senselessness of the act as she maintained he had no known enemies.
In the wake of the shooting, the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad launched an investigation, appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of the person responsible. Despite these efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with Daniel Carbajal's murder, and the case remains unsolved. The shooting was one of several violent incidents that plagued Huntington Station that summer, raising concerns among residents about the safety of their community. A year later, in July 2015, the community came together to dedicate a memorial at Depot Road Park, planting a tree in honor of Daniel Carbajal and two other victims of violence, a lasting tribute to the lives that were tragically cut short.
