In the early morning hours of August 27, 2016, in Huntington Station, New York, 18-year-old Antoine Butts-Miller was fatally shot. The male teenager was among a large group of people gathered outside a residence on 5th Avenue when gunfire erupted at approximately 3:30 a.m.
Butts-Miller was struck by the gunfire and immediately transported to Huntington Hospital by the Huntington Community First Aid Squad. Tragically, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
A second individual, a 31-year-old man, was also wounded in the shooting. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and was subsequently released.
In the wake of the shooting, the Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad launched an investigation into the incident. Detectives at the time believed there were numerous witnesses present at the gathering and urged anyone with information to come forward. Authorities actively sought assistance from the public, encouraging individuals to provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
Despite the public appeals for information from the numerous potential witnesses, the investigation into Antoine Butts-Miller's death did not immediately result in any arrests. In the years following the incident, there have been no publicly available reports detailing the identification of any suspects or arrests made in connection with the shooting. The case, which highlighted concerns about gun violence in the community, remains unresolved as detectives have continued to seek leads to bring those responsible to justice.
