Layla A. Freeman, a 21-year-old Black woman from Kansas City, Missouri, was killed on what should have been a day of celebration: her 21st birthday. The tragic events of May 13, 2025, unfolded in the city’s Valentine neighborhood, cutting short a young life and turning a milestone occasion into a scene of violence.
That evening, around 9:45 p.m., residents near the intersection of West 37th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue called 911 to report the sound of gunfire.
Some witnesses told authorities they heard a woman’s terrified pleas of "Please don’t, no… please," followed by another volley of shots. When Kansas City police officers arrived, they discovered Layla lying unresponsive in the street. She had been shot multiple times, and despite the efforts of first responders, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives began piecing together the events that led to the shooting. Through interviews, they learned that Layla had been in contact with her ex-boyfriend, Rasheed Turner, earlier that day. A cousin informed police that she had been on a FaceTime call with Layla, who said she was going to meet Turner because he claimed he wanted to give her a birthday present. This meeting took place even though Layla had secured a temporary order of protection against Turner to keep him away. Court records also showed Turner had been previously investigated for two separate domestic violence assaults in Grandview, Missouri.
The investigation was aided by crucial witness accounts and digital evidence. Residents reported seeing a man flee the scene immediately after the shooting in a blue Ford Mustang with a black convertible top. Investigators found a social media profile belonging to Turner that featured photos of him with a matching vehicle. By combining this information with phone data and license plate reader technology, detectives were able to definitively link Turner to the crime.
Rasheed Turner was arrested and charged in connection with Layla’s death. More than a year later, the legal proceedings came to a close. In August 2026, Turner pleaded guilty to the charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. On October 7, 2026, a judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. With Turner's conviction and sentencing, the case was officially closed as of October 2026.
