In the winter of 2018, a knock on the door of her Kansas City, Missouri home forever altered the lives of LaShonda Myers' family. On the evening of January 24th, the 31-year-old Black woman was at home with her 10-year-old son when he answered the door to an unknown man. The visitor asked to speak with someone, and when LaShonda came to the door, she was fatally shot in the entryway of her residence on Monroe Avenue.
Her young son, who witnessed the horrific event, immediately ran
upstairs, hid in a bathroom, and called 911 for help. Police arrived at the scene to find LaShonda Myers deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. The sound of the gunfire was reportedly so loud that it caused hearing problems for her son.
At the time of her death, family and friends described Myers as a devoted mother to her two children who largely kept to herself. They also revealed that she had recently ended an abusive relationship. She was a graduate of Northeast High School and had pursued a career in healthcare, working as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Despite the tragic circumstances and the presence of a witness, the case remains unsolved. Investigators at the time did not release any suspect information, and there were no signs of forced entry at the home. The Kansas City Missouri Police Department continues to list the death of LaShonda Myers as an unsolved homicide.
