On the early morning of July 4, 2024, tragedy struck at a QuikTrip gas station located at 31st Street and Southwest Boulevard in Kansas City, Missouri. Tykeedra Henderson, a 22-year-old Black female, was sitting in her parked vehicle around 1:00 a.m. when gunfire suddenly erupted nearby. According to reports, shots were fired from outside her car, striking her and causing the vehicle to roll across the parking lot until it came to a stop on the south side.
First responders arrived to find her unresponsive inside the vehicle, and despite their life-saving efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident occurred during a heavy downpour, complicating the immediate gathering of evidence, and for months, the shooting appeared to be a random act of violence with no clear motive or suspect immediately identified.
For several months following the shooting, homicide detectives investigated the case while Henderson's family publicly sought answers and justice. The gas station became a site of mourning, where friends and relatives gathered to release balloons and hold vigils for the young woman who had aspirations of becoming a radiology technician. The police urged the public to come forward with information, offering a reward for tips leading to an arrest, but the case remained unsolved through the end of 2024. Investigators eventually pieced together evidence that pointed away from a targeted assassination and toward a reckless act of violence that claimed an innocent bystander's life.
In March 2025, approximately eight months after the fatal night, authorities announced a breakthrough in the case with the filing of charges against a suspect identified as Orlando D. Smith. Prosecutors charged Smith with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Henderson's death. According to court documents and probable cause statements, the shooting stemmed from a brief confrontation between Smith and a homeless man near the side of the gas station. Smith allegedly told detectives that he had been relieving himself when the man asked him for a cigar. Feeling threatened or startled, Smith turned and fired his weapon. He claimed in interviews that he believed he had only fired a warning shot into the ground to scare the man away, unaware that the bullet had traveled into the nearby parking lot and struck Henderson in her car. Smith was taken into custody and held without bond as the legal proceedings commenced.
