In the late hours of February 21, 2022, the life of 31-year-old Ashley Pettiford, a Black female from Kansas City, Missouri, was tragically cut short. She was discovered inside a vehicle near Linwood Boulevard and Agnes Avenue, having been fatally shot alongside her boyfriend, Jermaine Jackson. The violence of that night also left a lasting scar on her family, as her 5-year-old son, Prince Moore, was in the car and suffered a critical gunshot wound to the eye.
Miraculously, the young boy survived the horrific ordeal.
The investigation into the double homicide led authorities to 20-year-old David Emerson. Surveillance footage from a nearby apartment building captured the chilling moments of the attack, showing a suspect approaching the vehicle, opening fire, and then fleeing the scene with a white sack. Evidence recovered at the scene included several spent 9mm shell casings. Following a standoff with law enforcement, Emerson was taken into custody on March 4, 2022.
In September 2023, David Emerson pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Ashley Pettiford and Jermaine Jackson, and one count of first-degree assault for the injuries sustained by Pettiford's young son. As part of a plea agreement, additional charges of armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon were dismissed. The case drew significant attention from the community, with family and friends of the victims holding a vigil to remember their loved ones and to call for an end to the senseless violence that had shattered their lives.
