A reporter for KCUR, Kansas City's NPR member station, Okeson-Haberman was known for her insightful and compassionate reporting.
On that Friday, concern grew among her colleagues when she failed to
respond to messages. A fellow reporter went to her apartment to check on her and, upon arrival, discovered a bullet hole in the window. Peering inside, the colleague saw Okeson-Haberman wounded and immediately called for help. She was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
The bullet that struck Aviva Okeson-Haberman was believed to have been fired from outside her apartment building. Her death was ruled a homicide, prompting an investigation by the Kansas City Police Department.
