In the warm evening of July 23, 2022, in Kansas City, Missouri, the life of 25-year-old Jourdan Renee Thompson was tragically cut short. She was discovered in the driver's seat of her vehicle on Olive Street, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the head. In the backseat of the car, unharmed but witnesses to the horrific event, were her two young children, an infant and a toddler.
Jourdan, a mother of three who was born on June 11, 1995, in Kansas City, had worked for the U.S.
Postal Service. She was remembered as a vibrant person with a 'heart of gold' who was always ready to help others and was the life of any party.
The investigation into her death quickly led police to a person of interest, 38-year-old Raymone Cunningham, the father of one of Jourdan's children. A witness, who was also shot and injured during the incident, told investigators that she had arranged a meeting between Jourdan and Cunningham to resolve their differences. This witness recounted seeing Cunningham approach Jourdan's car, grab her by the head as her hands were on the steering wheel, and fire two shots.
Following the shooting, Cunningham reportedly sold his car and disposed of his cellphone. He was located by police during a traffic stop, where a Glock. 45 and a significant amount of cash were found in the vehicle he was a passenger in. During a police interview, Cunningham allegedly admitted to shooting Thompson twice in the head. He claimed that Thompson had threatened him in the past and that he heard the sound of a gun being cocked as he approached her vehicle. However, investigators noted that while a gun was found in the car's glove box, there was no weapon in her lap as he had described.
Raymone Cunningham was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a firearm, second-degree assault, and child endangerment. Court records revealed that Cunningham had a prior conviction for second-degree murder in 2005, for which he had been released from prison in 2020. He was ordered to be held without bond.
