On the evening of June 10, 2018, a tragic series of events unfolded in the Thousand Oaks subdivision of the Northland in Kansas City, Missouri, claiming the life of Margaret 'Maggie' Girard. The 49-year-old female had traveled to a home on North Revere Avenue to attend a weekly Sunday family dinner. She was accompanied by her 14-year-old daughter for the gathering, which was hosted by the mother of her former partner.
The atmosphere, typically reserved for family connection, shifted violently when Girard's ex-boyfriend, Douglas Pauling, initiated a deadly shooting rampage inside the residence.
Pauling, age 50, had a history of bipolar disorder and was reportedly not taking his medication at the time of the incident. During the dinner, he produced a firearm and opened fire on the guests. His actions resulted in the deaths of Girard, his own mother, 73-year-old Sharmalee Pauling, and his stepfather, 66-year-old Carl Deruyscher. Amidst the chaos, Girard's teenage daughter managed to escape the house physically unharmed, surviving the attack that claimed the lives of the three adults present.
Law enforcement officers from the Kansas City Police Department rushed to the scene after receiving emergency calls regarding the shooting. Upon entering the home, they discovered four deceased individuals. The investigation quickly determined that after shooting the three victims, Douglas Pauling turned the weapon on himself. Because the sole suspect died by suicide at the scene, there were no subsequent arrests, charges, or criminal trials associated with the case. Authorities closed the investigation as a murder-suicide, leaving the community and surviving family members to grapple with the sudden loss caused by the domestic violence.
