On the afternoon of January 3, 2025, a violent tragedy unfolded on the near southwest side of Indianapolis, claiming the life of Shannon Ramone Campbell Jr., a 23-year-old Black male. Around 3:30 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to the 1800 block of Howard Street, near the intersection of West Morris Street and South Belmont Avenue, following reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside a property that had been rented for use as a music recording studio. Despite emergency medical efforts, Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene, while the second victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Homicide detectives immediately launched an investigation, canvassing the area for evidence and witnesses. Their inquiries revealed that the victims were departing the studio when a vehicle approached them. Surveillance footage obtained by authorities reportedly captured the suspect driving up to the men before opening fire. The assailant, described as wearing a hood and a mask during the attack, fled the scene immediately after the shooting. Through the collection of evidence at the site and the use of investigative technology, police were able to identify a specific person of interest and a suspect vehicle associated with the crime.
Ten days after the fatal shooting, on January 13, 2025, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department’s Violent Crimes Unit located the suspect, 20-year-old Jason Powell. He was found in the 2800 block of Ludwig Drive, near Troy Avenue and Fisher Road. With the assistance of the SWAT team, officers executed an arrest without incident. Powell was subsequently taken into custody and charged with murder for the death of Campbell, as well as attempted murder regarding the second victim who survived the attack.
Following the arrest, the community and family prepared to say their final goodbyes. A visitation and funeral service were scheduled for later in the month at Sprowl Funeral & Cremation Care, with interment set for Floral Park Cemetery. As the legal proceedings began, the case remained under the jurisdiction of the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, marking the start of the judicial process for the accused while the grieving family sought justice for their loss.
