On January 15, 1983, Officer Gordon Brewster Bartel of the Kodiak Police Department in Alaska was fatally shot while performing his duties. At approximately 4:00 a.m., Officer Bartel approached a man he had previously warned about illegal camping within city limits. Intending to issue a citation, he encountered the individual near the East Harbor parking lot, across from the Mecca Bar. During this interaction, the man shot Officer Bartel, who succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
