In the spring of 2025, a meeting arranged for a gun transaction in southwest Louisville turned deadly, ending the life of 17-year-old Laith Rajha. The male teenager was found by Louisville Metro Police officers on the evening of May 6, suffering from a critical gunshot wound to the head at an apartment complex in the Valley Station neighborhood. The specific location was the 13000 block of Bold Forbes Boulevard, within the Woods of Glen Hill Manor by Pond Creek. He was rushed to UofL Hospital in critical condition but succumbed to his injuries two days later, on May 8.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to arrests. Within hours of the incident, police apprehended 18-year-old Jamal Sheikh. Investigators were aided by video surveillance from the apartment complex which showed a vehicle with a distinctive window decal. After locating the vehicle with Sheikh inside, he waived his Miranda rights and spoke with detectives. He admitted to driving three other individuals to the apartment complex for the express purpose of meeting Rajha for a gun transaction. He also confessed to removing the unique decal from his vehicle after the shooting in an attempt to alter its appearance, acknowledging the 'vehicle was hot.' Initially charged with assault and tampering with physical evidence, Sheikh's charges were upgraded to complicity to murder following Rajha's death. He also faced charges for unlawful transaction with a minor and possession of marijuana.
Further police work led to the apprehension of two more suspects. Muhamad Hassan, 18, and an unidentified 17-year-old male were also taken into custody. Both were charged with complicity to murder. According to court documents that later emerged, detectives were told that Hassan was the individual who was in control of the firearm and ultimately fired the shot that led to Laith Rajha's death. The three suspects faced the legal consequences of their alleged roles in the fatal encounter that cut a young life short.
