In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in Louisville, Kentucky, a tragic incident cut short the life of Zemenfes Tekle, a 33-year-old man who had moved to the city from Ethiopia in 2014. On April 12, 2016, while Tekle was asleep in his bed in his home on Cecil Avenue, several shots were fired. One of these bullets penetrated the house and struck him in the head, causing his death.
Authorities with the Louisville Metro Police Department arrived at the 1000 block of Cecil Avenue near Greenwood Avenue around 3 a.m. to find Tekle deceased inside the residence. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that he died from a single gunshot wound. Investigators have stated their belief that Tekle was not the intended victim of the shooting. It is thought that his roommate, who was on the front porch at the time of the incident, was the actual target of the gunfire.
Zemenfes Tekle had been living in Louisville for about a year and a half and had no family in the local area, with his relatives residing in Ethiopia. The homicide unit of the Louisville Metro Police Department is handling the ongoing investigation into his death. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the police have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
