In the early morning hours of July 10, 2024, a dispute in a parking lot on West Chestnut Street in Louisville's Russell neighborhood turned fatal for 60-year-old Thaddeus Eugene Miller. The altercation, which occurred around 3:17 a.m. at South 26th and West Chestnut streets, ultimately led to Miller's untimely death from a gunshot wound to the head.
The series of events began with a fight between Miller and another man, identified as 31-year-old Alonzo Thomas.
Thomas reportedly believed that Miller had taken a gun from his girlfriend, who had been trying to keep the weapon away from Thomas. Following the initial struggle, Thomas managed to acquire the gun from a bystander who had unloaded it.
After another confrontation between the two men, Thomas reloaded the firearm, aimed it at Miller, and fired the fatal shot. The entire incident was captured on surveillance video, which became a key piece of evidence for investigators. Through their investigation, police were able to identify Thomas as a possible suspect. They later confirmed his identity by comparing a known photograph of him with the surveillance footage, noting his unique tattoos that were visible in the video.
Louisville Metro Police arrested Alonzo Thomas and charged him with murder. Following his arrest, Thomas was held at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections. He later pleaded not guilty in court, and a judge set his bond at $250,000.
