On New Year's Day in 2023, the life of 28-year-old Reginald Speight Jr., a Black male, was tragically cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. The incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. in the Algonquin neighborhood, specifically in the 1800 block of West Gaulbert Avenue. Louisville Metro Police officers responded to a shooting report and discovered Speight at the scene, having sustained at least one gunshot wound.
He was pronounced dead at the location of the shooting.
Originally from Wilson, North Carolina, Speight was remembered as a kind and loving person who brought fun, laughter, and smiles to any room he entered. Friends and family recalled his love for everyone as if they were his own family. A fundraiser was initiated to help his family in North Carolina travel to Louisville and to cover funeral expenses.
The Louisville Metro Police Department's Homicide Unit is actively investigating the shooting of Speight, which marked the first homicide in the city for 2023. His case is listed among the open homicides for that year. Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have not publicly identified any suspects in connection with his death.
