On a Tuesday evening in Washington, D.C., the sounds of gunfire shattered the night in the Petworth neighborhood. When the chaos subsided, 19-year-old Zephaniah Wright, a male resident of Northeast, D.C., was found unconscious and not breathing in the 3700 block of Georgia Avenue Northwest. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he was pronounced dead at a local hospital on April 29, 2025.
The shooting, which occurred around 9:01 p.m.
near the Georgia Avenue-Petworth Metro station, also left two others wounded. A 15-year-old male was discovered at the scene with serious injuries and was transported to a hospital. A third adult male victim, who had been shot on the 800 block of Taylor Street, Northwest, took himself to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators believe there may have been an exchange of gunfire.
In the aftermath, police began searching for a black Honda HR-V with D.C. license plates that was seen leaving the area. The vehicle was recovered the following morning, but it was unoccupied. The investigation into the fatal shooting continued, and the Metropolitan Police Department offered a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Months later, authorities made breakthroughs in the case. On Thursday, June 19, 2025, members of the Third District Crime Suppression Team arrested 18-year-old Jose Hernandez of Northwest, D.C. He was charged with First Degree Murder while Armed. The search for additional suspects continued, leading to a second arrest on Friday, September 19, 2025. On that day, members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 18-year-old Jayden Wells, also of Northwest, D.C. He faced the same charge of First Degree Murder while Armed.
