In the summer of 1994, a young 19-year-old Black / African American woman named Kenya L. Willis vanished from Castleton, Indiana, leaving behind a mystery that would haunt her family and investigators for years to come. Working at a local pancake house, Kenya's life seemed to be moving forward, yet her connection to a coworker would cast a dark shadow over her disappearance.
She was last seen in June of that year, and as days turned into weeks, the hope of her safe return began to fade, launching a long and frustrating investigation into what happened to her.
In the initial stages of the inquiry, the focus was not immediately clear. However, as investigators delved deeper into Kenya's life, a person of interest emerged: her coworker, Eric D. Matthews. At the outset, Matthews was not considered a prime suspect, but his subsequent actions would paint a grim picture of a violent and dangerous individual. The suspicions against him grew significantly just two months after Kenya disappeared when his 18-year-old live-in girlfriend, Christina Darnell, also went missing under similarly troubling circumstances. Darnell, the mother of Matthews' two-year-old daughter, was never seen or heard from again, and her body has never been found.
Years later, the pattern of violence surrounding Eric D. Matthews would escalate, leaving no doubt in the minds of authorities that he was a predator. In May 1998, he murdered his 20-year-old wife, Lashann Sylve Matthews, in their home in Hammond, Louisiana. She was found bound, gagged, and choked to death. Following this horrific act, Matthews fled with their two children, triggering a nationwide manhunt. During his time on the run, he committed another unspeakable crime: the abduction and murder of his 17-month-old stepson, James Sylve, whose small body was discovered in a gym bag behind a church.
Following his eventual capture, Matthews was linked to this string of heinous crimes. While he was never formally charged in connection with the disappearance of Kenya L. Willis due to a lack of direct evidence, law enforcement officials strongly suspect his involvement. The chilling similarities in the disappearances of the young women in his life, coupled with his proven capacity for extreme violence, have led investigators to believe that Kenya met a tragic end at his hands. To this day, Kenya Willis's case remains officially unsolved, and she is still considered a missing person, a silent victim in a series of violent acts committed by a man who moved through the lives of young women with deadly intent. No arrests have ever been made in her disappearance.
