In the quiet city of Moscow, Idaho, the life of a beloved 61-year-old Caucasian woman, Terri Grzebielski, was tragically cut short on January 10, 2015. A well-respected physician's assistant and a vibrant presence in the local music scene, Grzebielski was found with multiple gunshot wounds inside her home. The shocking discovery was the beginning of a grim series of events that would leave the community reeling from a violent shooting spree.
The perpetrator was soon identified as John
Lee, 29, Grzebielski's adopted son. On that fateful Saturday, Lee embarked on a rampage, first killing his mother. He then proceeded to a Northwestern Mutual insurance office where he shot and killed his 76-year-old landlord, David Trail, and critically injured another man, Michael Chin. The violence did not end there. Lee then drove to a local Arby's restaurant, a place his parents often frequented. He asked for the manager, 47-year-old Belinda Niebuhr, and fatally shot her as she tried to escape through the drive-through window.
Following the shootings, Lee fled in his car, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that crossed into the neighboring state of Washington. The pursuit ended when his vehicle ran off the road, and he was apprehended by police. Inside his car, investigators discovered five firearms. Lee was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder.
Initially, John Lee pleaded not guilty to the charges. However, in March 2016, he changed his plea, entering an Alford plea for the three murders and a charge of aggravated assault. This type of plea meant he did not admit guilt but acknowledged that the prosecution had enough evidence to convict him. The plea agreement allowed him to avoid the death penalty. Lee was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. In the years following his conviction, Lee made several unsuccessful attempts to withdraw his guilty plea and appeal his sentence, claiming he was not in the right state of mind when he made the deal.
