In the early hours of Easter Sunday, April 17, 2022, the life of 17-year-old Desmond 'Des' Wilson Jr. was tragically cut short in Columbia, South Carolina. Just after midnight, deputies from the Richland County Sheriff's Department responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex on Garners Ferry Road. Upon their arrival, they discovered the young Black male's body in the breezeway of one of the buildings.
He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Wilson, a resident of Eastover, was remembered by family as a quiet and humble young man. His cousin recalled him as a 'gentle giant' who had a big heart. The sudden and violent nature of his death sent ripples of grief and shock through his community. His family and friends were left to mourn the loss of a life that was just beginning, with his funeral services held the following Friday at Antioch AME Zion Church.
The Richland County Sheriff's Department launched an investigation into the homicide, working in conjunction with the county coroner's office to piece together the events that led to the shooting.
