Summary based on 11 sources
In the early morning hours of July 2, 2025, Deshawn J. Carroway, a 29-year-old male from Columbia, South Carolina, was fatally shot at a CK Mart gas station on Broad River Road. The incident occurred around 4 a.m. when deputies responded to a call of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered Carroway with multiple gunshot wounds; he was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical services.

Investigators identified a suspect, Desmond Coleman, also 29, in connection with the shooting. Later that day, the Richland County Sheriff's Department's Special Response Team executed a high-risk warrant at a residence in Irmo linked to Coleman. While Coleman was not present, a vehicle believed to have been used in the killing was seized from the home. Authorities considered Coleman armed and dangerous and sought public assistance in locating him.

The search for Coleman concluded on August 8, 2025, when he was apprehended in Indiana by the Evansville Police Department, over 500 miles from Columbia. He was arrested on a murder charge for the death of Deshawn Carroway and was held without bond in Vanderburgh County, Indiana, awaiting extradition to South Carolina.

In the wake of his death, Carroway's family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in November 2025 against the CK Mart and its parent company. The lawsuit alleges that the convenience store was grossly negligent and reckless, citing a history of violent crimes, including other fatal shootings, drug overdoses, and sexual assaults on the property that the owners had purportedly ignored. The lawsuit claims that on the morning of the shooting, an unknown man, later identified as Coleman, had been loitering at the store for hours and instigated a confrontation with Carroway. The man followed Carroway into the store, left to retrieve a handgun from his vehicle, and then re-entered to continue harassing him before shooting him multiple times as Carroway tried to return to his car.
