In the late summer of 2003, the quiet community of Bartlett, Tennessee, was shaken by a brutal act of violence that claimed the lives of a well-regarded elderly couple. Lillian James, a 67-year-old woman, and her 82-year-old husband, Clarence, were found murdered in their home on Bartlett Boulevard in August. The couple, known for their friendliness, had fallen victim to a robbery that ended in a horrific double homicide.
Their bodies were discovered bound, strangled, and with their throats slashed. The nature of the crime sent ripples of shock and fear through their peaceful neighborhood.
The investigation into the heinous crime soon led authorities to Henry Lee Jones, a man who had previously resided in the Bartlett area. Evidence gathered by law enforcement painted a grim picture of the events that transpired. Jones, along with a 20-year-old accomplice named Tevarus Young, had targeted the James's home with the intent to rob them. Young would later testify that he witnessed Jones commit the murders. The investigation revealed that after the killings, Jones and Young fled the state. Jones was apprehended in his hometown of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, three weeks after the murders. Stolen jewelry belonging to Lillian James was recovered, further solidifying the case against him.
The legal proceedings that followed were lengthy and complex. In 2009, Henry Lee Jones was convicted of the murders of Clarence and Lillian James and sentenced to death. However, this was not the end of the legal battle. In 2014, the Tennessee Supreme Court overturned the conviction, citing that the jury had been improperly informed of other violent crimes Jones was accused of in Florida. This decision necessitated a new trial. In 2015, a jury once again found Henry Lee Jones guilty of the premeditated murders of the Bartlett couple. He was subsequently sentenced to death for a second time. This verdict and sentence were later upheld by the Tennessee Supreme Court, bringing a sense of finality to a long and arduous legal process. Tevarus Young, for his role in the crime, was charged with facilitation of murder and received a prison sentence.
