Among the victims was Tawanda Barron Christian, a 44-year-old Black/African American woman, whose life was cut short on the evening of November 18th. Her death was part of a shooting spree that claimed the lives of three other family members and left a teenager critically injured.
The perpetrator was identified as 52-year-old Mavis Christian
Jr., Tawanda's ex-husband. The violence began on a Saturday afternoon and spanned across multiple locations in Memphis. Just before 10 p.m., Tawanda was fatally shot on Howard Drive. Earlier in the day, Christian Jr. had shot and killed two other women and a 13-year-old girl, and seriously wounded a 15-year-old girl. The other adult victims were identified as Lateisha Bobo, 35, and Ruby Manuel, 56, who was the suspect's sister.
Family members remember Tawanda as the 'life of the party,' a woman with an infectious spirit and a bright smile who always put others first. She was a loving mother and grandmother whose main priority was her family. Her half-sister, Shatitra Bell, expressed the family's profound shock and grief, stating that she never imagined losing her sister in such a violent manner. Although police identified her as Tawanda Christian, her sister clarified that she had never married Mavis Christian Jr. and had always used her maiden name, Barron.
The manhunt for Mavis Christian Jr. ended in the early hours of November 19, 2023. Authorities located his vehicle on Alta Road and found him deceased inside from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. This tragic end to the search meant that he would never face a trial for the devastating loss he inflicted upon his family and the community. The incident has been described as domestic in nature, and court records from 2018 revealed a prior domestic dispute where Mavis Christian Jr. had physically assaulted Tawanda.
