Sixteen-year-old Mirickei McCrary, a young Black female, was enjoying a game of basketball on February 27, 2023, when a gray Chevrolet Impala drove down the street. In a sudden act of violence, occupants of the vehicle fired shots from the car's windows, striking Mirickei multiple times.
Emergency services were called to the scene in the 5900 block of Pebble Beach Avenue at approximately 6:16 p.m. First responders found the teenager on the ground with critical gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Regional One Hospital in an attempt to save her life, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after her arrival.
The senseless violence cut short a life full of potential. Mirickei and her sister had faced challenges, including housing instability that had impacted their schooling. Despite these obstacles, both sisters were enrolled in the Opportunity Memphis R3 program, which aimed to help them further their education and career goals. Mirickei had aspirations of a career in logistics, a future that was stolen from her. In the wake of this tragedy, her sister showed immense strength and resilience by returning to Oakhaven High School to earn her diploma, a tribute to her sister and their shared ambitions.
The Memphis Police Department's investigation into the homicide is ongoing. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made, and the individuals responsible for Mirickei McCrary's death remain at large and unidentified. Law enforcement has appealed to the public for any information that could lead to the capture of the suspects.
