In the early morning hours of July 5, 2024, a tragic and violent series of events unfolded in Indianapolis, culminating in the death of 21-year-old Treasure Gray. The incident began with a shooting and ended in a fiery car crash involving the red Pontiac Gray was driving, another vehicle, and an IndyGo bus at the intersection of 18th and North Harding streets.
Emergency responders arrived at a chaotic scene to find Gray and a friend inside the mangled Pontiac.
Treasure Gray was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Initially, it was believed her severe injuries were the result of the crash, but medical staff discovered she had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to her left knee, right thigh, and shoulder. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, Gray succumbed to her injuries three days after the incident. The Marion County Coroner's Office later determined that the cause of her death was blunt force trauma sustained in the collision. However, due to the circumstances involving the shooting, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department has classified her death as a homicide.
The investigation into Treasure Gray's death remains ongoing, and as of yet, no arrests have been made. Police have indicated that they have potential suspects, but have not publicly identified anyone. Investigators found a firearm in the other passenger vehicle involved in the crash, but it has not been confirmed if it was the weapon used in the shooting. Treasure Gray's family believes she was chased for several miles before the fatal crash occurred. A mother to a young daughter, her family and friends held a vigil at the crash site in her memory as they continue to seek justice.
