In the early morning hours of Halloween 2020, a heated argument shattered the peace at an Indianapolis apartment complex, leaving a 44-year-old woman dead. Deanna Sibley, a Black female, was found by Indianapolis Police at the Pangea Prairies Apartments around 3:47 a.m. on October 31, 2020, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy would later reveal she had been shot 15 times.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on Antonio Lowery, the 19-year-old boyfriend of Sibley's pregnant daughter. The dispute that ended in tragedy reportedly began over Facebook posts and escalated throughout the day. Lowery had been assisting Sibley and her daughter with a move to a new apartment. After leaving during one of their arguments, he returned demanding $100 for his help. The argument between Lowery and Sibley intensified, and as her daughter walked away, Lowery began shooting. Sibley's daughter, who was seven months pregnant at the time, heard the gunshots and her mother's plea, telling her to run. She managed to escape and hide under a truck.
Following the shooting, Antonio Lowery was arrested and confessed to the crime. He admitted to detectives that he shot Sibley over the money and the Facebook posts, stating that he was angry 'for no reason' and 'just got to shooting' until his gun was empty. In December 2022, a jury found Antonio Lowery guilty of murder. The following month, in January 2023, he was sentenced for his crime.
