In the early evening of May 29, 2007, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of a Kansas City neighborhood, leaving a young life extinguished and a family grasping for answers. Vonzall Temple Jr., a 17-year-old male, was sitting in his car in a driveway in the 2400 block of Kensington when he was ambushed. Witnesses reported seeing unknown Black males approach the vehicle and open fire, striking Vonzall multiple times.
In a desperate attempt to escape the sudden onslaught, the wounded teenager tried to drive away. However, his strength failed him, and his car traveled only a single block before coming to a stop against a pole in the 2500 block of Kensington. When police arrived at the scene just before 5:30 p.m., they found Vonzall slumped over in the driver's seat. He succumbed to his injuries a short time later. The assailants had vanished, fleeing the scene on foot.
For years, the case of Vonzall Temple Jr.'s murder has remained unsolved, a painful cold case for both his family and the Kansas City Police Department. Despite witness accounts of the suspects fleeing, no arrests have ever been made, and no individuals have been publicly named as suspects in the decade and a half since the shooting. Law enforcement and community organizations have repeatedly appealed to the public for assistance, with a substantial reward being offered for any information that leads to an arrest in the case. The passage of time has not diminished the hope for justice for the teenager whose life was so abruptly taken.
