On July 9, 2020, Bruce Lee Williams, Jr., a 26-year-old male, was fatally shot outside the Springhill Village Apartments in Staunton, Virginia. Despite immediate life-saving efforts by responding police officers, Williams was pronounced dead at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds. An investigation into his death led to the identification and arrest of two suspects, Ja'Quez Eshaun Jerome Brown, 18, of Fishersville, and Cameron Isaiah Bahle, 20, of Norcross, Georgia.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was connected to a planned robbery during a marijuana transaction. Brown and Bahle had arranged to purchase marijuana from Williams. After the transaction, an argument ensued between Brown and Williams. Brown then shot Williams multiple times, even as Williams tried to flee. After the shooting, Brown and Bahle fled to Georgia, where they were later apprehended on July 17, 2020, and extradited back to Virginia to face charges.
Ja'Quez Eshaun Jerome Brown was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Cameron Isaiah Bahle was charged with conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. During Brown's trial, the court found that the evidence did not support a charge of willful, deliberate, and premeditated murder, but did find him guilty of first-degree murder committed during an attempted robbery, as well as conspiracy to commit robbery, attempted robbery, and use of a firearm in the commission of an attempted robbery.
Family and friends of Bruce Williams, including the mother of his children, Lesha Arey, gathered outside the courthouse during court proceedings to show their support and demand justice for his death. They remembered him as a great person and an amazing father. His obituary noted that he was a high school graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and a devoted fan of the Dallas Cowboys. He left behind a son and a daughter.
