On a late Thursday night in what was usually a quiet Staunton, Virginia neighborhood, the life of 51-year-old Van Wesley Bell Jr., a male resident, came to a tragic and violent end. On March 14, 2013, Bell was shot and killed in the yard of his home on Fisher Circle. The incident marked the city's first homicide in nearly two and a half years.
The man authorities identified as the suspect was 61-year-old Steven Glenn Moore of Stuarts Draft. Investigators reported that Moore was the estranged husband of the woman with whom Bell lived. Moore allegedly drove to the residence, leading to a physical altercation between the two men near the front door. The confrontation escalated, and Moore is said to have fired the shots that resulted in Bell's death. A witness at the scene was able to provide a description of Moore and his truck to law enforcement.
Following the investigation, Steven Glenn Moore was arrested and faced charges of first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Subsequent legal proceedings found Moore guilty of the charges brought against him. In October 2022, at the age of 71, Steven Glenn Moore, a white male, was considered for geriatric parole. However, his release was denied by the Virginia Parole Board due to the serious nature and circumstances of the offenses. The board concluded that his release would diminish the seriousness of the crime and that he should serve more of his sentence.
