On a tragic Friday morning, the life of 39-year-old Jonathan Michael Jacobs of Staunton, Virginia, was cut short by gun violence. The fatal shooting occurred on March 8, 2024, at the Howard Johnson Motel on North Central Avenue in Staunton. Reports from the Staunton Police Department indicate the incident was reported at 9:55 a.m.
Following the shooting, a suspect, identified as 35-year-old Rodney Dwayne Phillips, also of Staunton, fled the scene. However, he was apprehended by law enforcement within an hour of the incident. Phillips was subsequently charged with second-degree murder in connection with Jacobs' death and was held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail.
The legal proceedings against Rodney Phillips began with a jury trial in Staunton Circuit Court. The initial trial, held in January 2025, ended in a mistrial as the jury was unable to reach a unanimous verdict. A second trial took place, and in April 2025, Rodney Phillips was found not guilty of the second-degree murder of Jonathan Jacobs.
