In the late summer of 2004, a 22-year-old Hispanic woman named Michelle Gina Valdez vanished from the streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was September 22nd, and her disappearance marked the beginning of a grim mystery that would haunt the city for years. Valdez, who was pregnant at the time, became one of several women who went missing between 2001 and 2005, their cases growing cold with the passage of time.
For nearly five years, Michelle's fate remained unknown.
Then, in February 2009, a woman walking her dog on the West Mesa, a barren landscape on the city's western edge, stumbled upon a human bone. This discovery led to an extensive excavation of the area, revealing a makeshift mass grave. Investigators unearthed the skeletal remains of 11 women and an unborn child. Michelle Valdez was identified as one of the victims, her body buried alongside ten other women and her own unborn baby. An autopsy confirmed that she was a victim of homicide, although the specific cause of death could not be determined.
The investigation into the West Mesa murders, as they came to be known, pointed to a serial killer. Many of the victims, including Valdez, had ties to drugs and sex work. While no arrests have been made in direct connection with Michelle's murder, authorities have identified persons of interest in the broader case. Two men, Lorenzo Montoya and Joseph Blea, have been scrutinized by investigators. Montoya had a history of violence against sex workers and was killed in 2006, after which the string of murders appeared to stop. Blea is a convicted serial rapist currently serving a lengthy prison sentence. Despite these suspicions, there has been insufficient evidence to definitively link either man to the slayings, and the case of the West Mesa Bone Collector remains unsolved.
