On a Friday morning in Staunton, Virginia, the life of 39-year-old Jonathan Michael Jacobs was tragically cut short. On March 8, 2024, Jacobs was fatally shot at the Howard Johnson Motel on North Central Avenue. The incident, which was reported to Staunton Police at 9:55 a.m., prompted an immediate investigation and a search for the person responsible.
Within an hour of the shooting, law enforcement located and apprehended a suspect who had fled the scene. The individual taken into custody was identified as 35-year-old Rodney Dwayne Phillips, also a resident of Staunton. Following his arrest, Phillips was charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He was subsequently held without bond at the Middle River Regional Jail.
The legal process that followed saw Rodney Dwayne Phillips face a jury trial in Staunton Circuit Court.
