In February 2004, the life of 43-year-old Donna Bennett Johnston was tragically cut short, marking the end of a terrifying chapter in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. A white female, Johnston became the eighth and final victim of the serial killer Sean Vincent Gillis. Her body was discovered on February 27, 2004, in a drainage canal near Ben Hur Road, south of Louisiana State University.
The brutality of the crime was immediately apparent to investigators, who found that she had been raped and strangled with a nylon tie wrap.
The investigation into Johnston's death revealed a horrifying level of post-mortem mutilation. Gillis had slashed her breasts, removed her left nipple, and cut out a tattoo on her right thigh. In an act of extreme depravity, he also severed her left arm at the elbow. The discovery of tire tracks near the scene would prove to be a crucial piece of evidence that would ultimately lead authorities to her killer. Investigators were able to identify the specific type of tire, and through a process of elimination and DNA testing, they zeroed in on Sean Vincent Gillis.
Following his arrest in April 2004, Gillis confessed to the murder of Donna Bennett Johnston with little resistance. He provided chilling details of the crime, even expressing a twisted sense of remorse in letters he exchanged with a friend of Johnston's. During a search of his home, police discovered 45 digital photos that Gillis had taken of Johnston's mutilated body, as well as pictures of her corpse in the trunk of his car. Gillis's confession also implicated him in the murders of seven other women in the Baton Rouge area, bringing his decade-long reign of terror to an end.
Sean Vincent Gillis was charged with three counts of first-degree murder, including the death of Donna Bennett Johnston, and three counts of ritualistic acts. In July 2008, he was found guilty and sentenced to life in prison after the jury could not reach a unanimous decision on the death penalty. The year prior, he had already pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of another victim. Gillis is currently incarcerated at the Louisiana State Penitentiary.
