In the quiet town of LaPlace, Louisiana, the lives of 76-year-old Sam Arcuri and his wife, Louella, were brought to a brutal and tragic end on May 9, 1997. The couple was found bludgeoned to death inside their home, a crime that sent shockwaves through the community and sparked a multi-parish investigation into a string of violent attacks against elderly residents.
The investigation into the double homicide of the Arcuris soon connected their case to a series of other murders and
attempted murders in the surrounding River Parishes. This collaborative effort between law enforcement agencies eventually led them to a single suspect: Daniel Blank, a 35-year-old auto mechanic. Investigators discovered that Blank had a history of preying on older, vulnerable individuals, his motive driven by an insatiable gambling addiction. He would rob his victims to support this habit. Blank's companion, Cynthia Bellard, was also implicated and arrested as an accomplice, accused of driving him to and from the crime scenes.
After a months-long investigation, Daniel Blank was located and apprehended in Onalaska, Texas, in November 1997. Following his arrest, Blank confessed to the murders of Sam and Louella Arcuri, as well as four other individuals, and the attempted murder of another couple. In November 2001, Daniel Blank pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of the Arcuris. A judge subsequently sentenced him to two life sentences without the possibility of parole for these crimes, ensuring he would remain imprisoned for the rest of his life. This was in addition to other sentences he received for the other crimes he committed.
