Camille Perniola, a 17-year-old girl, was tragically murdered on March 18, 1972, in Queens, New York. Camille was stabbed to death while she slept in her parents' home. The attack was part of a series of violent crimes committed by a nocturnal prowler who terrorized the residents of Queens between September 1970 and June 1972. This prowler, later identified as Joseph Baldi, targeted women in their homes, often entering through windows and attacking them in their beds.
Joseph Baldi, also
known as "The Queens Creeper," was a 31-year-old man with a history of mental illness and criminal behavior. He had been committed to mental institutions multiple times, including several terms at the Creedmoor State Hospital in Queens. Despite his history, Baldi was released from the hospital "by mistake" on January 21, 1972, just two months before Camille's murder.
Baldi's crime spree included the murders of several other women in Queens. On September 20, 1970, he killed Areti Koularmanis, a 23-year-old Greek-Canadian woman, in her home. After Camille's murder, Baldi continued his attacks, killing 21-year-old Clara Toriello on April 13, 1972, and 16-year-old Deborah Januszko on June 17, 1972. Baldi's attacks were characterized by their brutality and the fact that he often slashed his victims' brassieres, leading police to regard the crimes as sexually motivated.
Baldi was finally arrested on June 21, 1972, and charged with the murder of Deborah Januszko. During the investigation, police found five knives, a pistol, and a stack of pornographic magazines in Baldi's rented room, which was located near the Januszko home. Examination of Baldi's hospital records revealed that he was free on the nights when each of the ten attacks took place in Queens. On June 23, 1972, police announced that all four homicides in the series were considered solved with Baldi's arrest.
In 1975, Joseph Baldi was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for his crimes. He served his sentence at Sing Sing Correctional Facility until his death on October 17, 2009. The case of Camille Perniola and the other victims of Joseph Baldi remains a chilling reminder of the dangers posed by individuals with untreated mental illnesses and the importance of proper oversight in the release of such individuals from psychiatric institutions.
