On September 24, 1992, 32-year-old Robert J. Price, a quadriplegic male, was found dead at Cooper Green Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. The cause of death was determined to be a lethal dose of lidocaine, a medication typically used as a local anesthetic and for treating heart rhythm disorders. The amount of lidocaine discovered in his system was twice the lethal dose and four times the therapeutic dose, indicating a deliberate overdose.
