On a September evening in 2011, a 22-year-old man named Jamal Singleton was fatally shot in front of his family's home in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn. The young father, who had a two-year-old son, was working a custodial job at Verizon Wireless and helping to support his family. The incident occurred at approximately 9:43 p.m. on September 19th, outside the residence at 977 Greene Avenue.
According to law enforcement, an unknown assailant approached Singleton from
behind. The attacker had reportedly been seen pacing back and forth in the area before opening fire. A single bullet struck Jamal in the back, exiting through his chest. Emergency medical services responded to the scene and transported him to Woodhull Hospital, but his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead. The shooter was seen fleeing westbound on Greene Avenue immediately after the attack.
For years, the case remained cold with few public developments. The investigation, however, has seen renewed attention more than a decade later. In early 2020, the New York Police Department released a photograph of a potential suspect, described as a man standing six feet, two inches tall, who was last seen wearing a blue baseball cap and a blue sweatsuit. Later, in the summer of 2024, detectives disseminated newly obtained video footage to the public for the first time. This video shows a person of interest dressed in all green, possibly wearing a sweatshirt and pants or a medical-style outfit, walking down the sidewalk. Despite these efforts and the release of the suspect's image and video, no arrests have been made in the killing of Jamal Singleton, and the police continue to ask the public for any information that might lead to a breakthrough in the long-unsolved case.
