Captain Robert Ray Jones, aged 58, was accidentally shot and killed on September 16, 1983, in Austin, Texas. The incident occurred during a firearms training demonstration at the Texas Department of Public Safety regional license office in Garland. Jones, a long-serving officer who began his career on April 1, 1949, was demonstrating weapon-handling techniques when Trooper Ross Powell's revolver accidentally discharged, hitting Jones in the chest.
