On January 8, 2024, at approximately 7:48 p.m., 21-year-old Francisco Muntufa Miranda was fatally shot at the Avalon Palms apartment complex, located at 9300 Northgate Boulevard in Austin, Texas. Austin Police Department (APD) officers arrived to find Miranda with a gunshot wound; he was transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
In the initial stages of the investigation, detectives determined that one or more suspects involved in the shooting frequented the Avalon Palms complex. Despite this lead, no immediate arrests were made, and the suspects remained unidentified.
A breakthrough occurred in late March 2024, when APD's Homicide Unit, in collaboration with the Gang Suppression Unit and Violent Crimes Task Force, executed a residential search warrant near Loyola Lane and Decker Lane. During this operation, a juvenile male was identified as a suspect in Miranda's murder. The juvenile was found in possession of multiple extended-capacity pistol magazines linked to the murder weapon.
Further investigation revealed that this juvenile suspect was also involved in several other shootings, including a drive-by incident on December 20, 2023, at a North Austin convenience store. During that event, nine individuals, including five children aged between 4 and 15, were present and had to take evasive actions to avoid gunfire.
On March 26, 2024, the juvenile suspect was arrested and charged with murder and five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He was subsequently booked into the Gardner Betts Juvenile Detention Center. Additionally, a second juvenile was arrested in connection with the December drive-by shooting.
APD Homicide Unit Detective Gebhart, who maintained close contact with Miranda's family throughout the investigation, expressed hope that these arrests would bring some measure of peace to the grieving family during this difficult time.
