Officers commanded him to drop the object, but Wilson advanced towards them while illuminating them with a lighted object. Believing Wilson was armed, two officers discharged their weapons, striking him. It was later discovered that the object Wilson was holding was a cell phone. Wilson was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The incident prompted an investigation by the Crimes Against Persons unit and the Texas Rangers, as well as the department’s Shooting Review Team. The two officers involved, identified only as a patrol officer and a sergeant assigned to Westside Regional Command, were placed on administrative leave during the investigation.
