Patrolman Ernesto Serna, aged 31, was shot and killed on November 12, 1991, while working an extra-duty assignment as security at a Wal-Mart store in El Paso, Texas. Serna, who had served with the El Paso Police Department for two years, was off-duty when he saw a man take a coat from the store without paying.
