Jesus Lopez, a 51-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically shot and killed on May 29, 2022, in El Segundo Barrio, El Paso, Texas. The incident occurred outside Jalisco Café at 1029 E 7th Avenue, where Lopez was accompanied by a 66-year-old woman. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Angel Hinojos, confronted Lopez and the woman outside the restaurant. During the confrontation, Hinojos shot both Lopez and the woman.
Lopez succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, while the woman was listed in stable condition.
The investigation revealed that Hinojos, who is related to the victims, had ongoing problems with Lopez. On the day of the shooting, Hinojos approached Lopez and his sister, Maria Lopez, near a store. Without any argument or fight, Hinojos pulled out a pistol and shot Jesus Lopez five times. The weapon was found near an alley, and five casings from the pistol were recovered at the scene. Maria Lopez sustained a grazing wound to the forehead and was hospitalized in stable condition.
Hinojos was arrested shortly after the shooting and charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. During a bond hearing, it was revealed that Hinojos had been kicked out of the family home due to ongoing problems and fights with his uncle, Jesus Lopez. On the day of the shooting, Hinojos packed his belongings and went to look for his uncle with a gun. He allegedly told detectives that he was "pissed" and shot his uncle multiple times. Hinojos confessed to the shooting in a video-recorded interview with detectives.
Judge R. Nunez issued a bail of $500,000 for the murder charge and $250,000 for the aggravated assault charge. Hinojos remains in the El Paso County Detention Facility. The case has been classified as a premeditated murder, and the investigation continues as authorities gather more evidence and testimonies.
