Joseph Anthony Jimenez, a 19-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity from El Paso, Texas, tragically lost his life on February 21, 2020. The incident occurred during a drug deal gone wrong in the far east side of El Paso. Jimenez was shot in the chest by 22-year-old Zachary Carter after an argument broke out during the transaction. Jimenez was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Carter, along with an accomplice, attempted to flee the scene by car.
However, Carter crashed the vehicle and fled on foot, abandoning the car. He was later arrested by police with the help of a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter, which tracked him down to a residence on the east side of El Paso. Carter was charged with murder and held under a $1 million bond.
Another suspect, 18-year-old Joseph Banda, was also arrested in connection with Jimenez's death. Banda was taken into custody and booked into the El Paso County jail on a $1 million bond. The investigation revealed that Jimenez and Carter had met at a residence on Bird Song Street for the drug deal, which escalated into a physical altercation before Carter shot Jimenez.
The case drew significant attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the subsequent arrests of the suspects involved. The El Paso Police Department and Crimes Against Persons unit were heavily involved in the investigation, which highlighted issues within the justice system and the challenges of addressing violent crime in the area.
