Jason Jay Diaz, a 15-year-old Hispanic male from El Paso, Texas, tragically died on February 20, 2018. Jay was a cancer survivor who had battled B-cell lymphoma from a young age and had recently been in remission. He was known for his love of family, reading, and football.
Jay's death occurred when his stepfather, Miguel Angel Herrera-Chico, was attempting to clear a malfunction in a shotgun. Herrera-Chico accidentally shot Jay in the chest while unloading the gun.
The incident took place at their home on Dale Road in El Paso.
Following the tragic accident, Herrera-Chico was charged with manslaughter. He was taken into custody and later jailed on a $50,000 bond. The family was devastated by the loss of Jay, who was described as a wonderful, happy child who lived for his family.
