Tony Lamar Huggins, a 25-year-old male of African American ethnicity, tragically lost his life on November 6, 2018, in Austin, Texas. Huggins, who was also known as "Florida Boi Tony," was a rapper and commercial driver from San Angelo. He was fatally shot during what was reported to be a botched drug deal.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of a Walmart on Norwood Park Boulevard.
Huggins had driven from San Angelo to Austin with $60,000 to purchase marijuana from Isaac Jerome Thomas, 23, and at least two other men. According to witness accounts, Thomas pulled out a gun and demanded the money. When Huggins refused, Thomas shot him. Thomas then allegedly took Huggins' cellphone, keys, and the cash before fleeing the scene in a vehicle driven by another accomplice.
Thomas was arrested the following day on an unrelated probation violation and was later charged with capital murder. He was held without bail in the Bastrop County Jail. The investigation revealed that Thomas had a history of criminal activity, including a prior conviction for evading arrest and an indictment for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
The case drew significant attention due to the circumstances of the shooting and the lockdown of a nearby elementary school as a precaution. Despite efforts by medics to save him, Huggins was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident marked the 31st homicide case for Austin police that year.
Isaac Thomas' trial for capital murder proceeded, and he faced serious legal consequences for his actions. The case highlighted the dangers associated with drug deals and the severe impact such incidents can have on individuals and communities.
