Julio Cesar Gamez-Contreras, a 26-year-old Hispanic man, tragically lost his life on August 11, 2019, in Austin, Texas. The incident occurred in the parking lot of La Preferida Bar on North Lamar Boulevard. According to reports, a verbal altercation inside the bar escalated into a physical confrontation that spilled into the parking lot. As the victims were approaching their vehicle, a suspect in a white Cadillac Escalade truck blocked them in and began shooting. Gamez-Contreras was pronounced dead at the scene, while two other Hispanic men in their 30s sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Dell Seton Medical Center.

The Austin Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, describing the suspect as a Hispanic man, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a stocky build. The suspect was seen wearing blue jeans and a white shirt with a silver design, possibly with a goatee or mustache. The investigation revealed that the suspect fled the scene in the Cadillac Escalade truck with chrome wheels. The Travis County Medical Examiner ruled Gamez-Contreras' death a homicide.

In the aftermath of the shooting, the Austin Police Department released video footage of the suspect's vehicle leaving the scene and sought public assistance in identifying the shooter. The investigation led to the issuance of a murder warrant for Pedro Fuentes Espinoza, a 42-year-old Hispanic man, who was considered armed and dangerous. Espinoza was also linked to another murder that occurred in February 2020, further complicating the case. Police believe Espinoza may have fled to Austin to avoid arrest for a previous murder in Mexico.

The case remains under investigation, with authorities continuing to search for Espinoza and urging anyone with information to come forward. The tragic death of Julio Cesar Gamez-Contreras has left a lasting impact on his family and the community, highlighting the ongoing challenges of addressing violent crime in the area.
