He was fatally shot in the parking lot of a mobile home park located just north of the intersection of U.S. 183 and Lamar Boulevard. Despite life-saving measures taken by Austin-Travis County medics, Juan Carlos was pronounced dead at the scene around 5:50 p.m.
The suspect in this case, 18-year-old Gregorio Vences-Benitez, was arrested on Tuesday following the incident. He was taken into custody by the Lonestar Fugitive Task Force and is facing a first-degree murder charge. Witnesses reported that Vences-Benitez fled the scene before police arrived. The motive behind the shooting has not been disclosed by authorities.
The investigation revealed that the victim, Juan Carlos Cruz, approached a red SUV before collapsing to the ground as the vehicle fled the scene. Surveillance footage and witness statements played a crucial role in identifying the suspect and his vehicle. The owner of a residence that was shot multiple times during the incident mentioned that his daughter, who was in a dating relationship with Vences-Benitez, was not home at the time.
Vences-Benitez was found and arrested without incident after investigators received a tip about his whereabouts. He is currently held on a $500,000 bail. The case remains under investigation, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information or video footage to come forward.
