On the evening of April 7, 2025, at approximately 7:29 p.m., Austin emergency services received multiple calls reporting a shooting in the 300 block of Nueces Street. When officers from the Austin Police Department arrived at the scene, they discovered an unresponsive Black male with apparent gunshot wounds. The victim, later identified as 39-year-old Tavon Brown, was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased at 8:17 p.m.
Investigators determined that Tavon Brown,
a Black male, had been walking north toward the Shoal Creek pedestrian bridge with another individual when they encountered two males. During this brief interaction, Brown reportedly made a comment to one of the individuals about his position on the walkway. In response, the suspect fired at Brown, striking him. The suspect, a 16-year-old Hispanic male, fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended by law enforcement.
Following his arrest, the juvenile suspect was charged with first-degree murder, theft of a firearm—a state jail felony—and evading arrest, classified as a Class A misdemeanor. Authorities have stated that aside from the brief exchange between Brown and the suspect, the motive for the shooting remains unknown. Homicide detectives and crime scene specialists processed the scene and interviewed witnesses as part of the ongoing investigation.
This incident marks Austin’s 13th homicide of the year. Law enforcement officials continue to seek additional information regarding the case and encourage anyone with relevant details to contact the Austin Police Department or submit an anonymous tip through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for information leading to further developments in the investigation.
