Christopher Bowser, a 23-year-old male, tragically died on May 2, 2021, in Austin, Texas. He was shot in the 600 block of Neches Street around 9:41 p.m. Emergency services took him to Dell Seton Medical Center, where he underwent surgery, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead the following day.
The Austin Police Department identified Blake Washington, a 56-year-old man, as the suspect.
Washington was initially charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but after Bowser's death, the charge was elevated to first-degree murder. Detectives used video footage of the incident to locate Washington at a tent on 4th Street and Interstate 35, where he was detained by police.
In March 2023, Washington was convicted of manslaughter in connection with Bowser's death and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The Travis County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound in the manner of homicide.
The case brought significant attention to the issue of gun violence in Austin, and the community continues to seek ways to address and prevent such tragedies.
