VerNae Watson, a 23-year-old female, was fatally wounded in a shooting on a Sunday evening. At the time of the incident, she was a passenger in a vehicle traveling in the vicinity of Hillcrest and Bannister roads.
According to the man driving the car, the tranquil evening was shattered by the sound of several gunshots. In the chaotic moments that followed, he realized that Watson had been struck by a bullet to the head. He immediately drove to a residence on Newton Avenue and called for help. Despite the swift response, Watson succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, November 3, 2015.
In the wake of her death, friends and family remembered VerNae as a vibrant and caring individual. She was described as having a buoyant and outgoing personality, a sweet and generous spirit who was never afraid to speak her mind. She had attended Metropolitan Community College-Penn Valley and was working as a home health care provider. As the oldest of five siblings, she was a protective and supportive figure in her family. Her childhood friend recalled her as a constant source of cheer and support, someone who was always there, no matter the circumstances.
The Kansas City Police Department investigated the shooting, with the driver reporting that he did not see any other vehicles or people in the area at the time of the gunshots. As of the initial reports, no suspects had been identified, and no arrests had been made in connection with the homicide. The sudden and violent end to a promising young life left a community in mourning and a family searching for answers that have yet to come to light.
