On February 2, 2025, 49-year-old female Jodie Hopcus was tragically killed in a triple homicide at her residence in the Northland neighborhood of Kansas City, Missouri. Police officers were dispatched to the home in the 4100 block of Northwest 65th Street around 12:40 a.m. after receiving a distress call from a neighbor. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Jodie unresponsive along with her 73-year-old mother, Sherri Duncan, and her 24-year-old daughter, Hailey Hopcus.
All three women were pronounced dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. A family dog was also found deceased inside the home.
The sequence of events reportedly began with a domestic dispute between Jodie and her ex-boyfriend, 50-year-old Armando Navarro Jr., who also resided at the property. According to a surviving family member who escaped the house, the argument started when Jodie asked Navarro to move out. After initially retreating to his bedroom, Navarro allegedly emerged with a handgun and began firing, first wounding Jodie in the arm. Witnesses stated that after running out of ammunition, he retrieved a larger firearm and fatally shot Jodie. The violence escalated to include the other family members present, while the survivor managed to flee to a nearby residence to summon help.
Following the shootings, the suspect fled the scene in a white 2020 Ford Expedition registered to one of the victims. Law enforcement tracked the vehicle to Abilene, Kansas, approximately two hours west of Kansas City. Navarro was taken into custody by local authorities after his vehicle reportedly became disabled and he requested motorist assistance. He was subsequently charged in Platte County with three counts of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree assault, four counts of armed criminal action, and animal abuse. He was held without bond, with prosecutors indicating they were reviewing the case for potential capital punishment.
